Use Data Management → Contact Merge to review suggested duplicates. Matching names or addresses are suggestions, not proof that two records represent the same household or organization.

Before you begin

You need permission to perform the merge. Open each proposed contact and compare people, addresses, giving history, and memberships. Do not merge unrelated people merely because they share an email or address.
A merge moves records into the contact you keep and removes the merged contacts. Review the final confirmation carefully; there is no routine undo action.

Merge a group

  1. Open Contact Merge and review the suggested groups.
  2. Choose the master contact to keep.
  3. Select only the duplicate contacts you intend to combine. Exclude unrelated records from the group.
  4. Select Merge to open the configuration flow.
  5. Check the master, included records, and Merged contact name.
  6. Continue to Review before merge. Inspect the summary, including membership information when present.
  7. Confirm the merge and wait for success.
  8. Open the retained contact and check its individuals, contact information, gifts, tags, and memberships.

Troubleshooting

If the proposed contacts disagree in a way you cannot resolve, cancel and investigate first. If the merge fails, preserve the error and refresh the contacts before trying again. If a merge completed with an unexpected result, use Get support with the retained contact’s details rather than attempting a second merge to reverse it. For incoming signups that need to be linked to a person, use Subscriber match instead.
